Best Twin Mattresses for Toddlers

For most toddlers moving to a twin, choose a firm mattress without a memory foam top, ideally with an easy-clean surface: our top pick is the Naturepedic 2-in-1 Organic Kids. Sleep Foundation says toddler mattresses are usually medium-firm to firm and advises against memory foam for young children. The AAP’s firm-surface rules apply to babies up to 1 year, and no medical body sets a firmness for older toddlers, so treat this as sensible editorial guidance, not a medical requirement.

In detail

Who each one suits

Specifications are each brand’s or retailer’s own; notes draw on pediatric and government guidance and independent reviews. We did not test these mattresses.

Best overall for toddlers#1

Naturepedic 2-in-1 Organic Kids

There is no polyurethane foam, latex or wool in this one, and each side has a job. The waterproof side, which wipes clean, is for the little-kid and potty-training years; flip it to the quilted side for later. Naturepedic describes the feel as extra firm, and the materials list is one of the most spelled out in this guide.

Why it stands out

  • Certified by GOTS (organic cotton and manufacturing), MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold.
  • A 5-inch innerspring with a 1.5-inch microcoil comfort layer on the big-kid side.
  • Naturepedic lists a 100-night trial. Its pages show both a 25-year and a lifetime limited warranty, so confirm the terms before you buy.

Good fit if

  • You are moving a toddler out of a crib and want a firm surface.
  • Potty training is underway and a wipe-clean side would save you work.
  • You want a foam-free mattress with its certifications named.

Skip it if

  • You want a soft feel: the brand calls it extra firm.
  • Accidents are likely on the quilted side: the brand suggests a protector there.
  • A Premium price is out of reach.

Naturepedic says placing its mattress directly on the floor will void the warranty, so this is not the one for a floor bed.

Best washable#2

Newton Baby Kids’ Twin

Newton skips foam and coils altogether. The core is Wovenaire, a food-grade polymer that Newton says is about 90% air, and the brand says the whole mattress can be washed, core included. It is 5.5 inches thick and arrives in three core pieces. Sleep Foundation rates it firm and The Bump picks it for allergies, though that is an editor’s view and not a medical one.

Why it stands out

  • Airflow is the design goal, and there is no foam to hold heat.
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified by UL.
  • Newton lists a 100-night trial, a limited 10-year warranty on the core and 2 years on the cover.

Good fit if

  • You want the whole mattress washable, not just the cover.
  • You need a low profile for a bunk or trundle.
  • You want a foam-free surface for a young child.

Skip it if

  • Your child is near 100 pounds: Newton designs it for kids up to that weight.
  • You want waterproofing: it is water resistant and Newton suggests a waterproof pad.
  • You want a plush feel.
Best budget#3

Linenspa 6-Inch Innerspring

A plain, low-cost coil mattress with a firm feel, and that is exactly why it works as a starter twin. Comfort foam is quilted into the cover over steel coils, so there is no thick memory foam layer. Linenspa says it suits bunk beds, trundles and daybeds. Medical News Today and Today’s Parent both list it.

Why it stands out

  • One of the lowest-cost coil options in the Budget range.
  • Most sources call it firm; Linenspa says both “firm feel” and “medium-firm”.
  • CertiPUR-US foam and a 10-year limited warranty on US purchases, according to Linenspa.

Good fit if

  • You want an inexpensive firm first twin for a young child.
  • You want a spring feel, not foam.
  • A 6-inch mattress fits your trundle or bunk manual (upper bunks are for age 6 and up).

Skip it if

  • You want thick cushioning for an older child.
  • You need a washable cover: Linenspa says do not remove it.

Helix Kids 8-Inch

Helix built this one to change with the child: flip it and the feel changes. Helix sets the firmer side for ages 2 to 7 and the softer side for ages 8 and up, with 6-inch wrapped coils in the middle. It is the pick Sleep Foundation, Fortune, Sleepopolis and Mattress Clarity each name best overall.

Why it stands out

  • Two sides on one mattress: Helix Responsive Foam on the firmer side, gel memory foam on the softer side.
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified, with CertiPUR-US foams. Helix also states it is fiberglass-free.
  • Helix lists a 365-night trial and limited lifetime warranty, though editors have cited shorter trials and those terms were not confirmed for retailer purchases.

CoverTENCEL, water-repellent finish

Good fit if

  • You want one twin to cover the years from a young child to a tween.
  • You prefer coils with foam over an all-foam bed.
  • A water-repellent cover is enough for your household.

Skip it if

  • You need a waterproof mattress: the cover is water-repellent, not waterproof.
  • The bed is a bunk or trundle with limited rail height: 8 inches may be too tall.
  • You want certified organic materials.

Bear Cub Kids

Bear rates this hybrid 6.8 out of 10 for firmness and builds it with reinforced edge coils, which matters on a bed that gets sat on and climbed over. Forbes names it best for toddlers and Sleep Foundation best for young kids, even though the top layer is gel memory foam, which that same site cautions about for young children.

Why it stands out

  • Gel memory foam, transition foam and 6-inch wrapped coils at 8.5 inches.
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified by UL, with CertiPUR-US foams. Bear states it is fiberglass-free.
  • Bear lists a 365-night trial and limited lifetime warranty; Fortune and The Bump cite 120 nights.
Height8.5 in

Feel (brand)Medium-firm
CertificationsGREENGUARD Gold, CertiPUR-US foams
CoverQuilted TENCEL blend

Good fit if

  • You want coils and foam at one steady firmness.
  • A sturdier edge matters for a child who sits on the side of the bed.
  • You have a standard twin frame.

Skip it if

  • You want two sides that change with age.
  • You need waterproofing built in: that comes from a separate Bear encasement.
  • You want organic materials.

Moving out of the crib soon?

Start with a firm surface and plan for accidents. A wipe-clean side or a waterproof pad will save you a lot of laundry.

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Time the move by readiness

HealthyChildren.org says it may be time once your toddler can climb out of the crib, or at about 35 inches tall. Nationwide Children’s says most move by age 2, and UPMC says 2 to 3.

02

Plan for falls

CHOC suggests a soft rug or pillows beside the bed. CPSC says portable bed rails are for ages 2 to 5, never under 2, and that gaps can entrap children, so fit them with no openings.

03

Keep the room safe

A big bed means a toddler can get up alone. HealthyChildren.org advises safety gates at the bedroom door and at the top of the stairs.

Honest note

A twin can feel big to a toddler, Sleep Foundation notes, and a toddler bed lets you keep the crib mattress for longer. A twin costs more up front but lasts longer. If your child is under 1, a twin mattress is not the right place to sleep at all; follow AAP safe-sleep guidance instead.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can a toddler sleep on a twin mattress?

Yes, once they have left the crib. CHOC says parents can head straight to a twin bed instead of a toddler bed, and UPMC lists twin beds with safety rails as an option. Toddlers often leave cribs between about 18 months and 3 years, Sleep Foundation says. Add a rail or a soft landing beside the bed.

Should a toddler mattress be firm?

Most editorial advice says medium-firm to firm. Sleep Foundation says most toddler mattresses rate 6 to 7 on the firmness scale because toddlers move around at night. That is not a medical rule: the AAP’s firm-surface guidance covers babies up to 1 year, and we found no medical guidance setting firmness for toddlers.

Is memory foam safe for toddlers?

Sources disagree. Sleep Foundation says memory foam is not recommended for young children and that toddler mattresses typically use polyfoam, yet its kids’ guide lists memory foam picks with no stated age. AAP and CPSC warnings are about infants. We leave memory foam tops out of our toddler top three for that reason.

Toddler bed or twin bed: which is better?

A toddler bed uses a crib-size mattress, about 28 by 52 inches, so you can often keep the one you have. Sleep Foundation says a twin will fit your child for longer but may feel big at first. If you want one purchase to last for years, a twin usually makes more sense.

Can a 2-year-old use a bed rail on a twin?

CPSC says children’s portable bed rails are intended for ages 2 to 5 who can get out of bed without help, and should never be used under 2. Nationwide Children’s says rails should sit flush against the mattress and frame with no openings. Follow the rail maker’s fit instructions exactly.

How long will a twin mattress last a toddler?

Several years, though probably not all of childhood. Sleep Foundation says most mattresses should be replaced every 6 to 8 years, with about 5.5 to 6.5 for innerspring. A two-sided mattress such as Naturepedic’s or Helix’s is designed to carry on as a child grows.
