Best Waterproof Twin Mattress for Kids

For a child who wets the bed, choose a mattress with waterproofing built in, or add a good protector: our top pick is the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Deluxe. Moonlight Slumber calls the permanent cover waterproof and easy to clean, and adds a washable fitted cover on top. Bed-wetting is common: NIDDK says about 1 in 6 five-year-olds wet the bed. The AAP and NIDDK both suggest a waterproof layer, so a separate protector is a fine answer too.

In detail

Who each one suits

Specifications are each brand’s or retailer’s own; notes draw on pediatric and government guidance and independent reviews. We did not test these mattresses.

Best built-in waterproofing#1

Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Deluxe

This one is built around accidents. Moonlight Slumber puts a waterproof, wipe-clean performance cover on the mattress itself, then adds a removable, washable fitted cotton cover over it. One side has standard support and the other has plush memory foam. No editorial list we read names it, so this pick rests on brand and retailer details.

Why it stands out

  • The brand calls the permanent cover “Waterproof & Easy to Clean”; care is a damp sponge and mild soap.
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified on the brand page, with CertiPUR-US foam.
  • Lifetime product warranty per the brand, though another image on the same page says limited lifetime.

TypeTwo-sided foam
Feel (brand)Standard side and plush memory foam side
CertificationsGREENGUARD Gold, CertiPUR-US foam
CoverWaterproof, plus washable fitted cover

Good fit if

  • Bed-wetting or frequent spills are your main concern.
  • You want waterproofing built in, not added later.
  • You want a thinner foam mattress in the Mid-range.

Skip it if

  • You want a stated home trial: none is listed.
  • You want organic certification.
  • You want coils or no foam.

Separately, the FTC alleged in 2017 that two other Moonlight Slumber baby mattresses were not as organic as advertised. We found no organic certification listed for this model, so we judge it only on its waterproofing.

Best two-sided#2

Naturepedic 2-in-1 Organic Kids

There is no polyurethane foam, latex or wool in this one, and each side has a job. The waterproof side, which wipes clean, is for the little-kid and potty-training years; flip it to the quilted side for later. Naturepedic describes the feel as extra firm, and the materials list is one of the most spelled out in this guide.

Why it stands out

  • Certified by GOTS (organic cotton and manufacturing), MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold.
  • A 5-inch innerspring with a 1.5-inch microcoil comfort layer on the big-kid side.
  • Naturepedic lists a 100-night trial. Its pages show both a 25-year and a lifetime limited warranty, so confirm the terms before you buy.

Good fit if

  • You are moving a toddler out of a crib and want a firm surface.
  • Potty training is underway and a wipe-clean side would save you work.
  • You want a foam-free mattress with its certifications named.

Skip it if

  • You want a soft feel: the brand calls it extra firm.
  • Accidents are likely on the quilted side: the brand suggests a protector there.
  • A Premium price is out of reach.

Naturepedic says placing its mattress directly on the floor will void the warranty, so this is not the one for a floor bed.

Best fully washable#3

Newton Baby Kids’ Twin

Newton skips foam and coils altogether. The core is Wovenaire, a food-grade polymer that Newton says is about 90% air, and the brand says the whole mattress can be washed, core included. It is 5.5 inches thick and arrives in three core pieces. Sleep Foundation rates it firm and The Bump picks it for allergies, though that is an editor’s view and not a medical one.

Why it stands out

  • Airflow is the design goal, and there is no foam to hold heat.
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified by UL.
  • Newton lists a 100-night trial, a limited 10-year warranty on the core and 2 years on the cover.
Height5.5 in

CoverZip-off, machine washable, water resistant

Good fit if

  • You want the whole mattress washable, not just the cover.
  • You need a low profile for a bunk or trundle.
  • You want a foam-free surface for a young child.

Skip it if

  • Your child is near 100 pounds: Newton designs it for kids up to that weight.
  • You want waterproofing: it is water resistant and Newton suggests a waterproof pad.
  • You want a plush feel.

MLILY JAMA Kids 5-Inch

One of the few budget mattresses designed for kids rather than sized down from an adult model. MLILY says the JAMA is for ages 3 and up and lists trundles and the floor as fits. It also lists bunk beds, but federal rules require a warning against children under 6 on an upper bunk. The zip-off blue modal cover is washable, and an anti-slip bottom helps keep it in place.

Why it stands out

  • Zip-off washable cover at a Budget price.
  • CertiPUR-US foams and an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 cover, according to MLILY.
  • Light for a mattress at about 21 pounds, per the brand, so it is easy to move and air out.

CoverZip-off, washable, anti-slip bottom

Good fit if

  • Your child is 3 or older and you want a low bed.
  • Accidents are likely, and a washable cover matters.
  • You want a kids’ product at a Budget price.

Skip it if

  • Your child is under 3: MLILY sets 3 and up.
  • You want a firm surface: MLILY rates it medium.
  • You want warranty terms up front: the product page does not state one.

Milliard 5-Inch Memory Foam

A 5-inch mattress with something most thin mattresses do not have: a removable, machine-washable cover. At 17 pounds it is also easy to lift. Today’s Parent rates it for bunk beds. The catch is length: Milliard lists 74 inches, an inch shorter than a standard twin.

Why it stands out

  • 1 inch of memory foam over 4 inches of base foam, sold as firm.
  • Removable, machine-washable polyester cover.
  • CertiPUR-US foam, according to Milliard.

TypeMemory foam
Feel (brand)Firm

Good fit if

  • You want a washable cover on a very thin mattress.
  • It is for a trundle, daybed or bunk.
  • You need to lift it often.

Skip it if

  • You want a trial or a stated warranty: neither is listed.
  • Your frame needs a full 75 inches.

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Layer the bed

NIDDK advises layering waterproof pads and fitted sheets so wet bedding can come off quickly. The NHS suggests waterproof covers on both the mattress and the duvet.

02

Know protector from encasement

Sleep Foundation says a fitted protector covers only the sleep surface, while an encasement surrounds the mattress and usually zips closed. It adds that polyurethane barriers can trap heat.

03

Treat stains fast

Sleep Foundation suggests blotting, then water, vinegar and a little detergent, then baking soda. It warns hydrogen peroxide can damage foam or latex. Check your brand’s care instructions first.

Honest note

Waterproof does not solve bed-wetting. Mayo Clinic says it is generally not a concern before age 7, but see your pediatrician if it continues after that, or if it restarts after six months or more of dry nights, as the AAP also advises. Also note that many covers are only water-resistant, and stains can void a warranty.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need a waterproof mattress for bed-wetting?

Not necessarily. The AAP says a plastic cover under the sheets protects the mattress, and NIDDK suggests waterproof pads. A built-in waterproof cover saves you a step, but a good protector on a mattress you already like also works. Choose by which is easier for your family.

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?

Brands use the words differently, so read the listing. Newton says its cover is water resistant, not waterproof, and suggests a pad. Helix says water-repellent; Nectar says stain- and moisture-resistant. Moonlight Slumber and Naturepedic’s little-kid side are described as waterproof by their brands.

Can bed-wetting void a mattress warranty?

It can. Sleep Foundation says some warranty policies may be voided if evidence of bed-wetting is present. The Zinus warranty excludes water damage and stains and tells buyers to use a stain-resistant pad, and Nectar’s excludes liquid damage. A protector from day one is the simple fix.

How do I get urine smell out of a mattress?

Sleep Foundation suggests stripping and laundering the bedding, blotting, spraying equal parts water and vinegar with a little detergent, letting it sit about 15 minutes, blotting again, then covering with baking soda for several hours and vacuuming. Use only a small amount of hydrogen peroxide on old stains, since it can damage foam or latex.

At what age should I worry about bed-wetting?

Mayo Clinic says bed-wetting before age 7 generally is not a concern, and to talk to a professional if it continues after 7 or starts after dry nights. NIDDK says to ask about treatments if nothing changes after 3 to 6 months. Your pediatrician can help at any age.

Does a waterproof cover make a mattress hot?

It can. Sleep Foundation says polyurethane barriers can trap heat, and that vinyl backings have downsides as well. Foam also tends to hold more heat than innersprings, Consumer Reports says. A washable fitted cover over the top and a cool room can help.
